Civil and social competences are defined as a dynamic system of knowledge, understanding, judgments, skills, abilities, values and personal qualities, which together allow a person to act effectively in a civil society, to realize their rights and freedoms. Such competences are formal and developed through: various tasks for discussion, understanding of key concepts “democracy”, “respect for human dignity”, “responsibility”, “participation, “equality”, etc., i.e. the content of the lesson; work in groups, pairs; interdisciplinary projects; own example; experience (participation in school self-government).
Emphasis is placed on the expediency of using the European experience in this direction, in particular the work of the Council of Europe, whose experts have created and tested the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture, which can be used in the educational process to civic and social assess.
The author provides examples of exercises for formative assessment at the Ukrainian and foreign literature lessons. The evaluation criteria are based on the descriptors from the Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture.
