FORMATION OF CIVIC COMPETENCE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE NEW UKRAINIAN SCHOOL IN THE PROCESS OF STUDYING INTEGRATED COURSES «I EXPLORE THE WORLD», «UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE AND READING»
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of formation of civic competence of elementary school students of the New Ukrainian School in the process of studying the integrated courses «I Explore the World» and «Ukrainian Language and Reading». Contradictions that actualize the problem of forming a young person as a citizen and patriot are considered. The importance of civic education of elementary school students is emphasized.
A content analysis of educational and methodological materials was carried out; in particular, manuals for the first grade from the integrated courses «I Explore the World» and «Ukrainian Language and Reading». It is concluded that the educational texts, works of art (mini-stories, poems) and illustrations contained in the textbooks for the first grade do not sufficiently serve the formation of civic competence.
In this regard, the authors created a method of personality development of a first-grader as a citizen and patriot in the process of studying integrated courses «I Explore the World», «Ukrainian Language and Reading»; enriched the content of these subjects with texts about Ukraine, its history, culture, language, native region, literature, oral folk art, the heroic struggle for independence of Ukrainians in the XX-XXI centuries, selected thematic works of art (for example, poetry by Yurii Shkrumeliak «Who are you, little boy?», «I am a Ukrainian child»), which raise a first-grader as a Ukrainian patriot and citizen. The authors’ method of studying the course «I Explore the World and Ukraine in it» is offered. Examples of tasks that should be offered to first-graders at the classes of integrated courses «I Explore the World» and «Ukrainian Language and Reading» are given.
The importance of forming a first grade student as a national-linguistic personality, organization of dialogic speech, orientation of schoolchildren to the speech etiquette of Ukrainians, education of language tolerance, etc., is emphasized; this problem is especially relevant due to the large number of temporarily internally displaced children in Ukraine. New methods and forms of civic education of 1st grade students in the process of studying these courses are proposed.
