Abstract

The article presents a historiographical analysis of the problem of physical education of adolescents in school and out-of-school institutions of Ukraine during the first half of the 20th century to the first half of the 21st century.
Based on the analyzed interpretation of the concept of “historiography,” a generalization of historiographical achievements concerning the outlined problem of the development of adolescents’ physical education in school and out-of-school institutions (the first half of the 20th century – the first half of the 21st century) has been carried out. The relevance of the study is substantiated in the context of declining levels of youth physical activity and increasing morbidity rates, which necessitate a reconsideration of the theoretical and methodological foundations of organizing physical education for adolescents. The purpose of the article is defined as the systematization and critical comprehension of scientific sources on the development of adolescents’ physical education in school and extracurricular environments.
The methodological foundations of the historiographical approach are revealed, and the works of domestic and foreign researchers are analyzed. The scientific contributions of O. Butovskyi, I. Boberskyi, S. Haiduchok, P. Franko, S. Rusova, Ya. Chepiha, H. Vashchenko, S. Siropolko, V. Sukhomlynskyi, as well as contemporary scholars such as T. Krutsevych, B. Shyian, O. Dubohai, M. Zubalii, A. Tsios, O. Khudolii and others are summarized. It has been established that in different historical periods the model of physical education evolved from a nationally oriented and patriotic concept of the early 20th century to a militarized and norm-based sports system of the Soviet period, and at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century a transition to a personality-oriented and health-preserving paradigm took place.
The current stage of development of adolescents’ physical education is characterized by differentiated approaches, variability of program content, increased emphasis on motivation and self-control, and integration of school and out-of-school activities. It is concluded that further interdisciplinary research of the problem is necessary, taking into account contemporary challenges, including inclusion, digitalization, and the decline in adolescents’ physical activity.
