FOREIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING IN TECHNICAL HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN UKRAINE (THE 1940S)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the analysis of foreign language training in technical higher education institutions in Ukraine (the 1940s).
The significant role and demand for specialists in engineering and technical specialties in the post-war reconstruction of the state in the 1940s has been emphasized.
The result of the need for highly qualified specialists during the research period was the intensive restoration of the network of technical higher education institutions and the opening of new faculties in these institutions (Mechanical, Technological, Mechanical Wood Processing, Mechanization of Woodworking and Transport).
It is indicated that the network of technical higher education institutions of the Ukrainian SSR at the end of the 1945-1946 academic year included mechanical engineering, power engineering, polytechnic, mining and metallurgical, chemical and technological, construction, forest engineering and management institutions, institutions of the Ministry of Railways of the USSR and the Ministry of the Navy, and the food industry institutions. Moreover, it is noted that the highest success rate in the 1945-1946 academic year was observed in technical higher education institutions.
The article focuses on increased attention to foreign language training at the legislative level. It is emphasized that foreign languages (German, French, or English) were included in the entrance examinations for engineering and technical specialties. It is highlighted that the lack of educational and methodological support for foreign language training strengthened publishing textbooks and manuals for universities, replenishing libraries with literature in foreign languages, equipping foreign language classrooms in universities, as well as producing educational movies and slide films.
